The Sherburne Public Library was built in 1910 by Dr. and Mrs. Homer G. Newton and Miss Carrie E. Pratt and then donated to the Town of Sherburne with “The only conditions being that it shall be inalienable and shall be perpetually and strictly used for Library purposes.” The building opened on June 12, 1911. The original library had electric lights, and the original seven chandeliers are still being used today. The South wing was built in 1938 and in 2002 the library was expanded, an elevator added, making it more accessible to all patrons. The library currently houses over 32,000 items and several rare collections including a collection of Hart Pottery. Other collections include paintings from a number of local artists, and many works by American artists, Henry Grant Plumb and Tompkins H. Matteson who were both residents of Sherburne.
