Our building was built in 1818 and housed a school and a private academy for more advanced education until 1868. It then housed a gravestone maker and after that a blacksmith until 1887 when architects were hired to turn it into a library. Two original fireplaces exist in the building to this day. A rear wing was added in 1970 to add central heating and to replace an existing out-house as well as the growing Local History Collection.
Many buildings in Gilbertsville are on the Historical Registry. Majors Inn, Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church, Post Office, Butternut Valley Grange (interesting/controversial weather vane on roof of Grange bldg. It is of Uncas a lead character in James Fenimore Cooper's book, The Last of the Mohicans), Commercial Block, Dunderberg Gallery.
