Continuing Education Requirements for Public Librarian Certification in New York State

Any person appointed to or employed in a permanent (part-time or full-time) professional librarian position in a public, free association or Indian library in New York State must hold an ACTIVE public librarian certificate issued by the New York State Education Department. Follow this link to learn more about obtaining your NYS Public Librarian Certificate.

As part of the requirements for a NYS Public Librarian Certificate, "professional certificates issued as of January 1, 2010, and thereafter shall only remain valid when 60 hours of professional development are completed every five-year period. Such periods will be defined as every five years from the initial certificate date." To learn more about the professional development requirements, please visit this site: Continuing Education for Public Librarian Certification

Keeping Track of Your Professional Development and Continuing Education Activities

Regardless of whether or not you are required to obtain hours of continuing education (CE) credit for a NYS Public Librarian Certificate, it's a good idea to keep track of the professional development and continuing education activities you participate in. You can use an Excel spreadsheet or Word document to keep track of the CE events you attend. If the event provides a certificate of attendance, it's a good idea to save those in a folder.

Here is an Excel template that can be saved and used to track your CE activities:
