Intellectual freedom is a cornerstone of the public library. It is part of the bedrock of the philosophy behind libraries.
It is contingent on every library, and every library board, to resist censorship and ensure the core principles of librarianship as articulated in the Freedom to Read Statement and the Library Bill of Rights are followed.
Every library should have a Collection Development Policy that includes a procedure to request the removal of material. That procedure must be followed when an item's removal is requested.
